How Long Will it Take to Receive an Estimate?

When you’re looking to take the first step in building your custom home, one of the first questions you may have is how quickly you will receive an estimate after the initial meeting with your trusted contractor. This is one of the most common questions we get, so let’s take a closer look at the estimation process and timeline.

How Long Will It Take To Receive My Estimate?

The first step in creating an estimate for a custom build is evaluating a plan provided by the client and their architect. To ensure a truly accurate estimate, those provided plans must be clear, detailed and all-encompassing, leaving little room for error – something that can be essentially used to submit permits and get the project started quickly and efficiently.

Submitting a less refined plan will affect the accuracy of the estimate, causing more allowances to be included, versus firm bids for chosen materials or selections. When creating your plan with your architect, be sure to include:

  • finish elevations
  • cabinet design
  • fixture schedules

After the building plans are received, our next step is to schedule a meeting with the client and their architect and/or designer to discuss the full scope of the project and get on the same page regarding vision for their completed custom home.

The next step in the estimating process is to review the client’s plans and determine which of our talented subcontractors will be needed to get the project completed. We will then send the plans to each potential subcontractor, so they may provide a bid or estimate for their specific part of the work.

On average, receiving subcontractor estimates take an average of two weeks. Once all the bids are received by our team, we select the most applicable subcontractors, confirm their accuracy and scope of the work and combine them into a comprehensive custom home proposal. This process that takes an average of one week.

To ensure complete accuracy, this complete estimate is then reviewed and cross-examined by our lead contractor as well as our administrative team.

After the proposal is vetted and finalized internally, we schedule an in-person meeting with the client to go over the proposal in detail and address any remaining questions or concerns.

This in-depth, carefully crafted process provides complete transparency for the client and ensures that no details are forgotten, which makes the process that much more enjoyable for the homeowner. Because the estimation process contains multiple moving parts, it can take an average of three weeks to receive a detailed and accurate estimate from HomeTech.
